This eBook reports on the critical (and growing) problem of Online Affairs. It includes the results of TWO Surveys that I conducted through my Website:
--One survey includes 847 people who had an online affair themselves.
--The second survey includes 1,047 people whose spouses had an online affair.
Each participant answered 20 multiple-choice questions about various aspects of their experience. They also had the opportunity to share "comments" about their experiencewhich are included in the report as well.
Below is a list of the questions included in the survey:
1. Gender: |
2. How did you make the initial contact? |
3. Were you actively seeking an online affair? |
4. Were you completely honest about yourself (marital status, age, job)? |
5. How long did it take to move to one-on-one contact (IM, e-mail, chat)? |
6. How long did it take to begin "intimate sharing" and/or "sex talk?" |
7. How much time was generally spent in a typical online interaction? |
8. How often did you talk to the other person online? |
9. Where did you make most of your online contacts? |
10. Did you ever begin talking on the phone? |
11. Did you ever swap photos? |
12. Did you ever meet in person? |
13. Did you ever have a physical sexual relationship? |
14. Was the other person married also? |
15. How did it end? |
16. How long did it last (or has it lasted so far)? |
17. Did your spouse suspect and/or confront your online affair? |
18. Did you admit to the online affair? |
19. Did your spouse ever learn the full truth? |
20. Are you still married and living with spouse? |
While you can read the responses to ALL 20 questions upon purchasing the eBook, I want to go ahead and share the striking responses to a few of the questions in the first survey of those who had an online affair themsevles.
Below are the responses to some key questions:
Gender |
30% - Male |
70% - Female |
Were you actively seeking an online affair? |
21% - Yes |
79% - No |
How long did it take to move to one-on-one contact (IM, e-mail, chat)? |
56% - Less than a week |
24% - One week to one month |
19% - More than one month |
Did you ever meet in person? |
59% - Yes |
41% - No |
Did you ever have a physical sexual relationship? |
49% - Yes |
51% - No |
The above responses illustrate the prevalence of women getting involved in Online Affairs and the surprising speed and degree to which they became seriously involved noting that while 79% of the respondents said they were "not seeking an affair, 49% eventually developed a physical sexual relationship. The "comments" they shared about their experience (which are also included in the report) shed a little more light on the progression of this whole process.
To read a "typical scenario" of the way online affairs usually progress, see an article permanently posted on this Website (which is also included in the 158-page eBook described here), see: Online Affairs.
I hope the results of this survey (and the additional "comments" and "postings by others about their experiences related to online affairs") will bring more recognition of the inherent dangers involved in Internet activity that is kept secret. While the Internet can be a wonderful source of information, this study shows that it can also lead to a dangerous Online Affair.
