Skin on Skin
by James Vaughan

When all the dust has settled, it's touch that counts.
              A smile is nice.
                   So is good conversation
                         and an approving look.
But when the chips are down, it's touch we crave,
and touch that tells us most clearly
where we stand with another person.

    Skin on skin...
              That's where we begin,
                   and where we end.

Strange—that the finest gift a human being can give another
gets blocked so often by fear.
Strange—and sad—that so many people go through day after day
              feeling alone and alienated,
when the solution to their dilemma
is so simple and so close at hand.

We can change our lives and the lives of those around us
                   by reaching out and touching.
